The Gaming Background

In the mid-80s, we got deeply into gaming, mostly miniatures and roleplaying games. I never really got into tabletop wargames, though I bought a few. Unfortunately, I rarely had the chance to play them. My friend joined a gaming club where he played Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay and FireFly. I visited the club several times and saw them play an interesting game from The Gamers. Two players were painting miniatures and issuing orders in one room, while two others in another moved counters and resolved combat. It looked fascinating, but I never got to try it.
That style of play always appealed to me, but I’ve yet to experience it. Eventually, I sold most of my wargames (about five or six) except Thunder at Cassino. It was one of the few I played, though only once. After that, I shifted to more traditional tabletop games, which I played for many years.
In 2023, I got tired of the trend of co-op, miniature-heavy, scenario-driven Kickstarter games. They all felt the same and didn’t hold my interest anymore. So, I decided to return to wargames. I reached out to a friend I’d played some roleplaying games with and asked if he’d be interested. He was, and since then, we’ve played countless games together. I love it, and I even got to play Thunder at Cassino again.
